The Food Pyramid


The food pyramid is published widely across the United States. The food pyramid is classified as the best guide to a healthy diet it is designed to be useful; it builds on familiar food groups as an organizing framework. The food pyramid is a guide to help you make healthy food choices each day. The food pyramid is a diagrammatic representation of the food groups that go into constituting a good diet it is a study conducted by USDA on the American diet so as to draw an outline for a healthy food diet. The Food Pyramid is a visual image illustrating the percentages of each group of food that make up a healthy diet.

 

The food pyramid is a guide to help us determine what we should eat everyday it is a tool to help you choose the right amounts of the various food groups. The food pyramid is divided into the following five sections: grains, fruits, vegetables, dairy, and meat. The Food Pyramid is only designed for children aged two and above, it is only meant to be a guide to a person’s daily caloric input. The Food Pyramid is definitely a much better aid at understanding nutrition than the old Four Basic Food Groups (meat, milk, breads/cereals/rice, and fruits/vegetables).

Food Groups

 

Foods are grouped not only by their nutritional content but also by how they are used.  Foods in one group can't replace those in another. New guidelines also stress eating a variety of foods high in nutrients and low in saturated and trans fat, cholesterol, sugar, and salt. Try to avoid eating trans fats (found in processed foods). Some foods naturally contain a lot of oil such as nuts, olives, avocados, and some fish. These oils are the healthy oils and you should include them in your diet. You should not eat the same amount of all types of foods. Eat less of some foods, and more of others.  That's because you need less of certain kinds of foods than you do of fruits, vegetables, grains, and dairy foods. 

 

As young children begin to eat the same foods as the family, offer them foods that are moderate in fat and saturated fat but provide the calories and nutrients they need for proper growth. Be careful to not to let children eat too many fatty and sugary foods. Good foods include skim milk, cheeses, and yogurt.

 

Along with the symbol, the government has set up an interactive website containing a wealth of information, including explanations of food groups, common foods in each group, detailed guidelines for good nutrition, and personalized tools for tracking eating and exercise habits. A healthy, balanced diet consists of eating a variety of foods, in differing amounts depending upon your situation and age. Each colored band narrows from bottom to top; the wider base of each color represents foods in that group which contain little or no fat or added sugars. These can be eaten more often than foods represented by the narrow top of the stripe which contain more fat or sugars. No matter what your age or activity level, MyPyramid recommends: Eating lots of fruits and vegetables, choosing whole grains instead of processed ones, avoiding excessive amounts of sugars, animal and trans fats (the fats found most often in margarines and prepared baked goods snack foods). Putting it all together: the Pyramid to use to guide your food choices is the new ”Striped Pyramid“ that is an improvement over the last pyramid that used shelves working up from the broad base to the narrow tip.

The food pyramid is similar to the old one in shape only. The food pyramid is a nutritional guide made by the United States Department of Agriculture that suggests just how much of a particular kind of food you should take in a day for you to remain healthy.  The food pyramid is the government's official pronouncement about what Americans should eat to stay healthy. The food pyramid is clearly the best way to format such knowledge, as it clearly prioritizes foods that should be consumed a lot and foods that should be consumed in moderation. A basic principle to be communicated by the food pyramid is that there are no good or bad foods but that the relative amounts to be consumed play a key role for our health.  It Must Be emphasized that the food pyramid is a guide that helps us make choices.  Remember, the Food Pyramid is not a rigid prescription, but a valuable reference to help you eat healthy and increase the quality of your life. 

 

The main emphasis of the Food Pyramid is on the five major food groups, all of which are required for good health. A new aspect of the food pyramid is its personalization components, accessible through the government’s MyPyramid website.( http://www.mypyramid.gov/). 

 

The whole purpose of having some sort of icon for the food pyramid is so that all of us food dummies will have an easy memory tool reminding us of what we should be eating.  Remember that the Food Pyramid is designed for nutrition, not dieting. Please note that the Food Pyramid is designed for persons over the age of two who do not have chronic health conditions.
